How Kitchen Cabinets Are Actually Built: A Buyer’s Guide

Cabinet showrooms are full of doors that all look great under showroom lighting. What separates a box that holds up for twenty years from one that starts sagging in three has almost nothing to do with the finish you see and everything to do with what’s underneath it. This guide walks through how cabinets are actually put together, so you can tell what you’re paying for — and make an informed call about what tradeoffs make sense for your project and your budget.

Frameless vs. Face-Frame: Two Legitimate Approaches

The first fork in the road is the box style itself.

Face-frame cabinets have a solid wood frame attached to the front of the box, and the doors are mounted to that frame. It’s the traditional American style — you’ll recognize it by the visible strip of wood between doors and drawers.

Frameless (often called “European style”) cabinets skip that frame. The box itself is rigid enough to hold the doors directly, usually with concealed hinges. This opens up slightly more interior storage space and gives a cleaner, more continuous look across a run of cabinets.

What it means for you: Neither is “better” — they’re different tools. Face-frame gives a bit more structural forgiveness (useful if walls or floors aren’t perfectly true) and reads as more traditional. Frameless maximizes usable interior space and gives a sleeker, more modern line, but it demands more precision in the box construction itself since there’s no frame to true things up. Your choice is really a style and layout decision, not a quality decision.

Box Materials: Plywood, Particleboard, and MDF

The cabinet box — the sides, back, and shelves — is usually one of three materials, and this is where cost and durability genuinely diverge.

  • Plywood is layers of wood veneer glued in alternating grain directions. It’s strong, holds screws well, and resists sagging and moisture better than the alternatives. It costs more.
  • Particleboard is wood chips and resin pressed into sheets. It’s the most affordable option and works fine for many applications, but it doesn’t hold screws as well over time and is more vulnerable to swelling if it gets wet.
  • MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is fine wood fibers pressed with resin — denser and smoother than particleboard, which makes it excellent for painted doors and profiled edges, but it’s heavy and, like particleboard, doesn’t love moisture.

What it means for you: Plywood boxes are usually the sturdier long-term choice, especially under sinks and near dishwashers where moisture is a factor. Particleboard is a legitimate budget choice for lower-moisture areas like upper cabinets. MDF earns its keep on doors and faces (see below) more than on structural boxes. None of these are “bad” materials — they’re suited to different parts of the cabinet and different budgets.

Joinery: How the Corners Are Actually Held Together

This is the detail most showroom visitors never check, and it matters more than almost anything else for how long a drawer or box lasts.

  • Dovetail joints — interlocking wedge-shaped fingers — are the strongest mechanical joint for drawer boxes. They resist being pulled apart even under heavy daily use and don’t rely on glue alone.
  • Doweled joints use round wooden pegs and glue to hold pieces together. Done well, this is a solid, durable joint — it’s a workhorse method, not a shortcut.
  • Stapled or nailed-and-glued joints are the fastest and least expensive to produce. They can work fine for lighter-use cabinetry, but they’re the first to loosen under repeated stress, especially on drawers that get opened dozens of times a day.

How to tell them apart: Pull a drawer all the way out and look at the corners. Dovetails show visible interlocking triangular fingers. Dowels show small round plugs. Staples show — well, staples, sometimes covered with a bit of putty.

Drawer Boxes and Slides: Where Daily Wear Shows First

Drawers take more abuse than any other part of a kitchen, so this is worth a close look.

A solid drawer box is usually 1/2″ to 5/8″ thick material (plywood holds up best) with strong corner joinery, as covered above. Thin drawer sides, especially in particleboard, are the most common source of a drawer that starts to sag or rack out of square within a few years.

Slides matter just as much as the box. Side-mount slides are common and affordable but can leave the drawer wobbly at full extension. Undermount slides are hidden, generally smoother, and typically support more weight without side-to-side play. Full-extension slides let you access the entire drawer; partial-extension slides leave the back third out of reach.

What it means for you: Open the drawer, pull it all the way out, and push down gently on the front corner. A quality drawer box and slide combination won’t flex or tip.

Doors: Solid Wood, MDF, and Veneer/Thermofoil

  • Solid wood doors have real grain and character, and they can be refinished over time. They also expand and contract with humidity, which is why a solid wood door usually has a “frame and panel” construction — a floating center panel that can move without splitting the door.
  • MDF doors (often painted) are dimensionally stable — they don’t move with humidity the way solid wood does, which makes them a strong choice for painted finishes and detailed profiles. They’re not real wood, so they don’t take stain the same way.
  • Veneer and thermofoil doors apply a thin wood layer or a vinyl film over an engineered core. They can look very close to solid wood or painted MDF at a lower cost, but the surface layer can be vulnerable to heat (near ovens) and to peeling at the edges over many years.

What it means for you: There’s no universally “right” door material — it’s a tradeoff between look, stability, and cost. If you want a painted finish, MDF is often a smarter substrate than solid wood because it won’t show grain-related cracking at the seams over time.

Hardware and Soft-Close: What’s Actually Worth It

Cabinet hardware ranges from bargain-bin hinges to genuinely engineered mechanisms, and this is one area where the difference is easy to feel.

  • Soft-close hinges and slides use a small hydraulic or pneumatic damper to ease the door or drawer shut instead of letting it slam. Beyond the obvious noise benefit, this meaningfully reduces wear on the joinery and finish over years of daily use — it’s one of the few upgrades that pays for itself in longevity, not just comfort.
  • Cheap hinges (soft-close or not) tend to sag or lose adjustment within a few years. Quality hinges hold their adjustment and are usually easy to identify by weight and smoothness of motion.

What it means for you: Soft-close is one of the more defensible upgrades in a cabinet order — it protects the cabinet itself, not just your ears.

A Quick Showroom Inspection Checklist

Next time you’re looking at cabinets in person, this takes about five minutes:

  • Open every door and drawer. Feel for smoothness, wobble, or resistance.
  • Pull a drawer all the way out and check the corner joints — dovetail, dowel, or staple.
  • Push down gently on an open drawer front. It shouldn’t flex or dip.
  • Knock on a cabinet side panel. A hollow, thin sound often means thinner material; a solid sound often means thicker plywood.
  • Check the shelf material and thickness, especially for anything that will carry weight (stacked plates, small appliances).
  • Ask what the box material is — plywood, particleboard, or MDF — and where it’s used in the cabinet (sides vs. back vs. shelves can differ).
  • Look at the door edges up close, especially on painted or veneered doors, for any signs of peeling or chipping at the seams.

None of these methods are inherently right or wrong — they’re tools that fit different budgets, styles, and use cases. The point of understanding them isn’t to chase the “best” option on paper; it’s to know what you’re actually buying so the choice matches how you’ll use the space.
